Tips for Making Bacon Cream Cheese Rolls

  • The original recipe did not season the cream cheese, so feel free to leave out the garlic powder and parsley. Other options are adding some paprika, onion powder, minced chives, or fresh herbs like thyme.
  • I used Pepperidge Farm Butter Bread, but their regular white bread would work well, too. I got 3 strips of bread from each slice of bread. You’ll want your bread about the width of your bacon or slightly smaller.
  • You can spread the cream cheese on each slice of bread after removing the crusts, then slice into strips or cut the strips of bread and then apply the cream cheese. I found the first option better.
  • I used regular toothpicks to hold the bacon, but knotted picks are fun for parties.
  • Some recipes suggest soaking the toothpicks in water so they don’t burn in the oven. If you partially cook the bacon as suggested, this shouldn’t be necessary.
  • Par cook the bacon in the microwave. It will help render off some fat, plus shorten the cooking time in the oven.
  • Use leaner bacon for a nice presentation.
  • Line your baking pan with non-stick foil for easy clean-up.

How to Make Bacon Roll-Ups

  1. Cut the bacon slices in half. 
  2. If you’d like, microwave your bacon pieces on paper towels for a minute or two to partially cook them. They should still be flexible.
  3. Remove the crust from bread slices (the number of slices needed depends on how many slices of bacon are in your package).
  4. Mix up the cream cheese filling.
  5. Smear each slice of bread with the cream cheese mixture, Cut each slice into 3 strips, then roll them up and set aside.
  6. Wrap a piece of bacon around each bread roll and secure with a toothpick. Place on a greased baking sheet (or line with nonstick foil).
  7. Bake at 375° until bacon is crisp, about 25 minutes.

A 5 ingredient bacon and cream cheese appetizer that will be the first plate empty at any gathering!!

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf of sliced white bread (I used Pepperidge Farm Butter Bread)
  • 16-oz package of sliced bacon
  • 12 ounces cream cheese at room temperature (1½ 8-ounce packages)
  • ¾ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons minced fresh parsley

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°. Line a baking sheet with non-stick foil or use regular foil sprayed with cooking spray.
  2. Separate the slices of bacon and cut each in half.
  3. Par cook the bacon in the microwave on a microwave-safe plate lined with paper towels, for just a minute or two. Set aside.
  4. Mix together the cream cheese, garlic powder, and parsley. Set aside.
  5. Remove crusts from 9 slices of bread. Spread cream cheese mixture over the bread slices, then cut each piece of bread into 3 strips.
  6. Roll each strip of bread into a spiral with the cream cheese on top, then place on a strip of the bacon, roll up and secure with a toothpick.
  7. Repeat with all the bread slices and bacon.
  8. Bake for 25 minutes, turning once, or until the bacon looks cooked and crisp.

Notes

The number of appetizers depends on how many strips of bacon are in your package. Mine had 13 slices so made 26 roll-ups.
